The Boy Mom Starter Kit
Everything I wish someone had handed me for raising a wild, wonderful, dirt-covered little boy. Not the Pinterest version — the real one.
4 mindset shifts that change everything
- The energy isn't a problem to fix. It's the whole point. Your job is to channel it, not cancel it.
- "Rough" and "gentle" can live in the same kid. He can wrestle at 4pm and cry over a bug at 4:15. Both are him.
- Connection before correction. A regulated boy listens. A flooded one can't. Fill the tank first.
- You are his safe place, not his drill sergeant. Calm is contagious. So is chaos. Pick your weather.
Gear that survives a boy
- ☐ Waterproof everything (boots, jacket, mattress pad)
- ☐ A "yes" bin of throwables (soft balls, bean bags)
- ☐ Bandaids in every bag, drawer, and pocket
- ☐ A basket by the door for rocks/sticks/"treasures"
- ☐ Clippers — boys + long nails + faces = no
- ☐ A crash pad (old couch cushions count)
Ways to burn the energy
- ☐ "How many laps around the yard?" (count together)
- ☐ Animal walks: bear crawl, crab walk, frog jump
- ☐ Carry-the-heavy-thing jobs (proprioception = calm)
- ☐ Water play, any temperature, any season
- ☐ A daily dose of real outside — non-negotiable
Phrases that connect
- "Show me how strong you are — can you carry this?" Turns big energy into a helpful job.
- "You're safe. I've got you." The reset button for a boy who's lost it.
- "Tell me about it — I'm listening." Boys talk more shoulder-to-shoulder than face-to-face. Drive, build, walk.
